On the day before Brexit didn’t happen, the BBC gathered on the Brightlands Smart Services Campus in Heerlen. Topic of the day was: ”Big Data, how can it help your business?” From the response it was clear that the question was indeed unanswered for most of the entrepreneurs in the audience.
By way of welcome we were introduced to both the Campus in Heerlen and the world of Big data, by Pieter Custers. From mood recognition to self-driving cars, it is clear that we have some game changers ahead of us. The main speaker of the day called in absent at the last moment, but was more than adequately replaced by a bright student from Maastricht University,Lucas Giovanni Uberti-Bona Marin, who introduced the audience to what’s happening with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Key take-away was that with all the changes coming our way, we need to adapt our thinking about intellectual property, accountability and other legal aspects. The other advise was not to trust self-learning systems blindly; before you know it they have picked up some bad habits from Social Media.
During the parallel sessions we were entertained by Maurice Jilderda from Sitech with a story about Industry 4.0, where huge collections of data are going to make predictions about service life of key pieces of equipment, and this will revolutionize the way we do maintenance. Big turn-arounds could become a thing of the past.
In the second session Stan Dieteren of Knowtice gave insight in how you can put a value on the knowledge that is present in your company, through the Knowledge Scorecard. In the end this is a big part of the overall value of the company, and much more predicative than the profits of the last 5 years.
