Now the road construction works at the campus are coming to an end, it’s really time to focus on new bicycle storages.
Recently, we received complaints regarding the availability of bicycle storage facilities, particularly the lack of covered places, distributed over the campus.
In addition to the structural need, a temporary inconvenience – due to the road construction works – has emerged for cyclists, who were facing overcrowded bicycle storages: our apologies for this. But as you may have seen, these road works are coming to an end and the bicycle storages are accessible again.
For the development of the campus, we use guidelines (BREEAM-NL norm). For bicycle parking facilities these guidelines aim at 10 (covered) bicycle places per 100 employees. For the current campus population (employees + students), this would add up to approx. 240 bicycle storage places. Theoretically, this is dealt with in the current plans that lead to 370 covered bicycle storage places, distributed over the campus, plus some 160 open bicycle parking places. These facilities will be ready in the first quarter of 2017. The plans for this have been reviewed based on feedback from the community, and anticipating the further growth of the campus.
In the updated plans, additional covered bicycle storages, approx. 35 places each, will be installed end Q1/beginning Q2 2017, in the vicinity of Center Court (one at the east, one at the south) and near the SABIC Building 130. This leads to a total number of 440 covered bicycle places (plus the 160 uncovered parking places) – to be installed shortly as well.
Some other local bottlenecks for the campus will also be tackled, and long-term plans are being developed to accommodate further campus expansions and to support developments and initiatives stimulating employees to commute by bicycle. More about this later in 2017.
