Last week, during the introduction period, Maastricht Science Programme (MSP) welcomed 119 new students who will start their studies at MSP on the 4th of September. During this period we also visited the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. The students were very excited to finally see the insight of the campus, our lab facilities, meet with our staff and see the campus facilities. They also went on a site tour to see what other companies are located on the Brightlands Chemelot site. Hopefully this will be the start of an enjoyable three-year collaboration between students and companies.
The Maastricht Science Programme is a bachelor’s programme based on the Liberal Arts & Sciences tradition, which prepares students for a specific master’s programme during a three-year broad programme in the natural sciences. Students have the freedom to choose and the responsibility to direct their own education. They can pick from a wide range of courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and various interdisciplinary fields such as biomedical engineering and neuroscience.
At the Maastricht Science Programme, we amongst others, use Research-Based Learning (RBL) as an integral part of the programme. In RBL, students work on contemporary research topics as part of their study. During courses and skills training, students examine research problems for which the answers are not yet known. They also conduct their own research in close cooperation with (external) scientists and researchers during the project periods and the Bachelor Thesis Research. This allows students to apply their knowledge and to make their own discoveries, rather than simply learning about existing theories. The practical aspects of their study take place at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, where the Maastricht Science Programme has state-of-the-art laboratories.
