Arriva is continually improving the service it provides for the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. ‘Our business analysts and transport planners keep a very close eye on user data and adjust the public transport routes and timetables accordingly,’ says Patrice van Bergen, Arriva’s Regional Director. ‘For example, we see that Maastricht University students are visiting the Brightlands Chemelot Campus more frequently. They travel by train to Beek-Elsloo, from there take the bus to the campus. In order to facilitate this growth in visiting student numbers, the regular bus route 33 will be supplemented with an extra route, 633, from 9 December 2018. This bus only runs during the morning rush hour, and goes straight to the campus without stopping on the way in order to transport passengers efficiently at the busiest time.
The transport company is also proactively looking at improving its travel products. Patrice van Bergen explains. ‘At Arriva, we consider it important that public transport is accessible to everyone. We therefore regularly consult with various stakeholders and look at tailored solutions. For instance, we received feedback from international students that travelling on public transport was too expensive for them. In cooperation with Maastricht University, we now offer a Sterabonnement (unlimited regional season ticket) or Trajectabonnement (zoned season ticket) for international students so they can use public transport at an attractive rate, just like Dutch students.’
When asked whether there is still room for improvement, Patrice answers, ‘Of course, there always is. The passenger satisfaction survey offers us plenty of insight into the various situations. However, it remains a balancing act between delivering the best possible service for our passengers and what is actually possible in terms of costs and capacity. Naturally, we understand that travellers would like to see a higher frequency of bus journeys and a direct bus connection to the campus. Unfortunately, based on the current number of passengers, we are not always able to provide this service. However, if the Brightlands Chemelot Campus continues to grow, we would of course be delighted to expand our service to match.’
