The Chemelot Young Professional Sessions (CHYPS) are organized by the Young Professional board but who are we and what do we do? In the next few weeks, we will introduce ourselves and it is my honor to kick off.
1. Who are you?
I’m Martien Würdemann a 30 year old Dutch chemist who enjoys cycling in his spare time.
2. What do you do?
I’m a PhD candidate at Maastricht University in the Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials, currently working on developing new aromatic monomers and applying them in polyesters.
3. Why the YP board?
I joined the YP board because I want to connect with, and help connecting the Young Professionals on the campus. I believe that having a strong network extending beyond your current employer is important for the rest of your career and will help with solving problems now. I want to use the potential for connecting and collaborating on campus, I believe that the Young Professional Sessions are a great opportunity to do so.
4. What do you think are the right tips & tricks for young talent at campus?
Get in touch with one another and don’t care that they work for another company. Watch out for divulging IP but get to know people, you never know how and when you can help each other in the future.
5. How do you see the future?
I think the future holds a lot of potential for us scientists to solve today’s problems, whether we do niche academic research or optimize polyolefin production. We do have to look beyond the confines of our workplace to gain new insights and new inspiration to truly solve these problems. The campus can provide the right environment, if the mindset is there.
